What do Docents do?

The Docent Council is a volunteer group whose purpose is to provide educational services to the public for the Long Beach Museum of Art. In this capacity, docents receive training to work with school children, adult tour groups, Museum visitors, families, and college classes.

What training will I receive?

The Museum Education staff provides training for Docents in the following areas:

* Information about Museum audiences and Museum Programs
* Art history pertaining to the Museum’s collections
* Art media and processes
* How to lead art making workshops
* How to lead tours for school children and adults

How long is the training?

Docent Training will begin this fall. Docent Trainees meet once a week for seven weeks. Trainees are also encouraged to attend regular Docent Council meetings, which occur twice a month.

How much time is involved?

Docent graduates are asked to give 100+ hours annually to the Museum. That works out to be an average of one tour per week and two Docent Meetings per month. After your training, we request that you give at least two years of active Docent service.

What are the benefits?

You will be helping the Museum welcome visitors and school groups, and help them connect with the arts! Without the Docent council, programs like Kidsvisions, which serves every Long Beach fifth grader, and the Children’s Cultural Festival would not be possible! You will have the opportunity to learn about the visual arts from specialists and artists. And you will join a wide circle of people who share similar interests and have the satisfaction of bringing the cultural heritage of art to the community.
