The community is invited to participate in the programs, services, and activities presented by the Education Department. Programs are designed to engage a variety of audiences with our collections and exhibitions through inquiry and an appreciation of the creative process. Families with Children

Children's Watercolor Workshop with artist Lori Lamont

Monasha by Lori Lamont
Sunday, June 1, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

In this FREE workshop, participants will make stick-puppets inspired by the circus animal parade series by local artist Lori Lamont. After a tour by Museum educators of Lamont's artwork in our special exhibition Three, children will work with Ms. Lamont to create their own colorful artwork using a variety of watercolor techniques. This program is recommended for children ages 7 - 14. Adult chaperons must remain on the LBMA campus while children are in the class. All supplies are provided.

Toyota Children’s Gallery

Eye on Design

June 6 - September 7, 2008

View artwork made by local third grade students, who over the course of a school year, explored their community, public art appreciation and the public art process. Artworks displayed include three-dimensional models of site-specific public art concepts that will be installed in the community next year. This exhibition is the culmination of collaboration between Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach Art Council, and Luther Burbank Elementary School.

Students K-12

KidsVisions Tours

The KidsVisions Program is available to all fifth grade students in the Long Beach Unified School District. The program content follows the guidelines of the National, State, and Long Beach School District Standards for Visual and Performing Arts. These tours begin at 10:00 am and bus transportation is provided. One adult chaperone is required for every 10 students and adults must remain with their group at all times. Toyota Tours for Children

Toyota Tours are free of charge to all school groups (public or private). Tours are available on Friday’s beginning at 9:30 a.m. One adult chaperone is required for every 10 students and adults must remain with their group at all times. There is a 40-student maximum for grades K—3 and 60 for all other grade levels. Fill out our online tour request form.

Self-Guided Visits

Teachers who wish to conduct their own tours can schedule self-guided visits. Write “self-guided” in the program title on the request form. One adult chaperone per 10 students is required and adults must remain with their group at all times. Self-guided groups may not enter the Museum before 11 a.m. Fill out our online tour request form

Educators and College Audiences

Teacher Professional Development

KidsVisions Labs

A professional development program for 5th grade teachers in the Long Beach Unified School District. Teachers are introduced to exhibitions and given tools to integrate the Museum into their classroom curriculum. A stipend is paid for this workshop and teachers receive an art educator in their classrooms to facilitate a lesson. For more information, please contact us by email or phone 562-439-2119.

College Course Tours

Guided College Visits

Educator-guided tours are available for classes of 10 to 15. Please submit your request three weeks prior to your requested tour time by email or through our online tour request form

Self-Guided College Visits

Join our docents for a 10-minute discussion on artworks in our current exhibitions. Each talk is different; come back each month to learn about another artwork in the Museum. Spotlight talks are held on the first Friday of every month and occasionally on weekends.

The Docent Council

Want to share your love of art? Check out our vibrant Docent program for more information.

The Docent Council is a volunteer group whose mission is to provide educational services to the public for the Long Beach Museum of Art. Join a wide circle of men and women who share similar interests and have the satisfaction of bringing the cultural heritage of the visual arts to the community. Be a part of connecting Museum visitors and school groups to the visual arts!

Volunteering at the Museum

The hundreds of dedicated volunteers who help the Museum are crucial to our well-being! There are many ways to get involved and to contribute your time. Our Education Department is always on the look out for more docents in order to fulfill public demand for tours. By volunteering with the Membership Department, you can share the joys of being a member with the general public. In addition, the Museum holds special events throughout the year that help raise money for our education and exhibitions programming.
