In honor of Black History Month, LBMA celebrates artist Alice Taylor Gafford and her notable career in the arts. At the age of sixty-five, Gafford earned a teaching certificate at UCLA and taught art in an adult education program. Gafford played an influential role in the founding and development of a number of pioneering art groups in Southern California and was called “the dean of black artists in Los Angeles” in recognition of her community leadership. Her painting Tea Party is a part of the Museum’s permanent collection and currently on view in the Decade by Decade: Women Artists of California exhibition. Inspired by Gafford’s oil paintings, this workshop will allow viewers to create a still life through the use of oil pastels.
